MADRID/Terranova – A Spanish fishing vessel has sunk off the coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland. According to the local authorities, several deaths are to be expected. At least four bodies were recovered on Tuesday (February 15, 2022) in the extremely cold water of the Atlantic, reports the Europa Press news agency, citing the Spanish sea rescue service.
Isabel Rodríguez, a spokeswoman for the Spanish government, meanwhile told journalists in Madrid that so far it was only known that numerous deaths were expected. According to this, only three crew members have been recovered alive and severely hypothermic.
Crew missing: Spanish ship sinks off Newfoundland
According to various information from Spain, between 22 and 24 seamen were on board the ship “Villa de Pitanxo” from Galicia in north-west Spain at the time of the accident. Accordingly, 16 crew members are from Spain. The rest of the crew is believed to be from Peru and Ghana.
Heavy shipwreck in the Atlantic near Canada: crew members missing
The shipwreck happened on the night of Tuesday (February 15, 2022, around 6:00 a.m. CET), it was also said. For the time being, nothing was known about the causes of the accident.
