The signs are thickening: A young couple from Upper Franconia may have perished in the flash flood at the famous Höllentalklamm on the Zugspitze.

Grainau – A 33-year-old woman from Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia was killed in the tidal wave at the Höllentalklamm at the foot of the Zugspitze.

It must be assumed that the person who is still missing is her 34-year-old partner from the Coburg district, said the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters on Thursday.

Last Monday, after heavy rain, masses of water rushed through the Höllentalklamm and the valley above. The identity of the woman who was rescued from the floods on Tuesday was confirmed by forensic and forensic examinations, it was now said. The relatives of the two would be looked after by pastors and the police.

The search for the missing person was no longer resumed on Thursday. However, a new search in the area near Grainau in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district is planned for next Monday.

The investigators are now in the process of reconstructing the exact course of the accident in the hiking area near Grainau in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, as the press spokesman for the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South, Stefan Sonntag, said. It is still not entirely clear how the accident happened.

On Wednesday, helpers searched the area again for four and a half hours. “There were a few places where you thought it could be a human body in the water,” said Sonntag. At one point, for example, a shadow was seen. The search was unsuccessful. Over 150 rescuers were on duty the previous days.

The emergency call was received by the police at 3:45 p.m. on Monday: The callers reported a tidal wave in Hammersbach in Höllental. Witnesses also reported that two people who were on a bridge above the Höllentalklamm at the time were swept away by the water along with the bridge.

Eight people were rescued from the gorge largely unharmed on Monday evening after the accident, they were partly trapped by the masses of water. dpa
