Great heat with temperatures of up to 40 degrees for weeks: the earth in Greece is dry. The fire brigade was able to bring numerous forest and bush fires under control for the time being.

Athens – In Greece, the fire brigade has brought numerous forest and bush fires under control. Fire-fighting planes and helicopters as well as hundreds of firefighters and volunteers were used for this purpose.

A total of 64 such fires had broken out across the country in the past 24 hours, the fire brigade said on Sunday. The Greek civil defense also warned of fires for central Greece and the island of Crete on Sunday. For half of the country there is therefore a great risk of fire.

Biggest fire on the island of Evia

The biggest fire raged on Saturday on the island of Evia: The fire broke out in forests near the town of Nea Styra in the southern part of the island for a previously unknown cause and had spread quickly due to strong winds. One village had to be evacuated. Nobody got hurt. One man was arrested. He is said to have tried to burn dry leaves and tree branches.

There was also a fire on the mainland, including in northeastern Athens and near the port city of Volos. Parts of Greece have been very hot for two weeks with temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees, and strong winds are blowing. dpa
