Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is considered a currywurst fan. Now he is annoyed about the course that a VW canteen in Wolfsburg is taking.
Wolfsburg – Former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (77) has spoken out about sausages. He is annoyed about the abolition of the famous VW currywurst in one of the Wolfsburg-based carmaker’s canteens.
“If I were still on the supervisory board of #VW, there would have been no such thing,” wrote Schröder in a post on the social platform Linkedin. “A vegetarian diet is good, I do it myself in phases. But basically no currywurst? No! ”He made clear and asked if the employees really wanted that. “Currywurst with French fries is one of the power bars of the skilled worker in production. It should stay that way. “
VW company restaurant soon meat-free
In Hanover, as in Berlin, there are “excellent curry sausages”, Schröder continues. “I don’t want to do without that, and I think: many others don’t want that in their company canteens either.” He added the hashtag “#rettetdieCurrywurst”. The former SPD Chancellor, who was Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister from 1990 to 1998 and a representative of the state on VW’s supervisory board, is followed by around 64,000 users on LinkedIn.
The company restaurant in the VW brand high-rise should be meat-free after the company holiday. The famous sausage will still be available in the canteen a few meters away on the opposite side of the street. Many employees wanted vegetarian and vegan alternatives, according to an internal information letter.
Schröder’s preference for currywurst is known
The fact that Schröder has a preference for currywurst has been known since the 1990s, when he was still married to Hiltrud “Hillu” Schröder. In 2002, as Chancellor, he inaugurated a US president into German food culture: he ordered currywurst and apple strudel for George W. Bush from “Theodor Tucher” on Pariser Platz. According to the manager at the time, however, the ex-chancellor showed more appetite than his American colleague – it was probably due to his jet lag.
How Schröder lives and eats today can be seen in part on the Instagram channel of his fifth wife, Soyeon Schröder-Kim. There she shares recipes of Korean dishes or a picture of her husband at the stove. The dishes with lots of vegetables and fish were a welcome change for him, she said in 2020.
