Former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe presents Horizons: A New Conservative Party

Former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe (2017-2020) presented this Saturday a new political party, Horizons, a conservative formation that will support the candidacy of the current president, the centrist Emmanuel Macron, to the 2022 presidential elections.

The party was presented at an event held in Le Havre, a city of which Philippe himself is mayor. The councilor has revealed the name of the new formation after an hour and a half of act.

«The party we are creating is a party called Horizons. Why Horizons? Because, to do it well, we have to see far, “he said in reference to what will be the party’s motto.

“You have to look far because if you really want to think about the country’s strategy, for 2050, you should not look ahead, right next to you, but you must necessarily look far,” he argued.

This “collective adventure” is based on a logic of “expansion” and “reunion” to build “a base of stability on which the President of the Republic can continue to act in the coming years.”

«This reactivation will go through an expansion of its electoral base (…). The objective is to create a real party, with statutes that will be presented this Monday, with a letter of values, “he said. In the structure of the formation, the mayors would have a special place with an “assembly” that will elect the vice president.

Regarding the political content of the proposal, Philippe has renewed his support for fiscal austerity and has defended a reform of the pension system.

The presentation was attended by the spokesmen of the parliamentary groups of the three parties that support Macron: Christophe Castaner for La República en Marcha (LREM), Patrick Mignola for the Democratic Movement (MoDem) and Olivier Becht for Agir.

Macron has not yet officially declared whether he will run for re-election, although the entire French political landscape takes it for granted. The first round of the presidential elections will be on April 10, 2022.
