A total of 40 babies were in the newborn department of a hospital in the Indian city of Bhopal. Fortunately, 36 of them were saved.

New Delhi – Four newborn babies have died in a fire in a hospital in India. The fire was probably triggered by an electrical short circuit, a local minister told reporters on Tuesday.

It took the fire brigade three hours to put out the fire in the newborn department in the city of Bhopal on Monday evening. 36 babies could have been saved. The head of government of the state of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, expressed his condolences to the families concerned and promised them 400,000 rupees (almost 4,700 euros) as compensation.

Dangerous fires are common in India. Building security is often poor and emergency exits are rare. The cause of the fires is usually poor or outdated electrical equipment. Just last weekend, eleven patients died in a corona department in the neighboring state of Maharashtra, as local media reported. dpa
