Four teams to test 2023 F1 tires at Imola

As we revealed a few days ago, Formula 1’s official compound supplier, Pirelli , had struggled to find room in this year’s tight schedule to hold its usual tests on the Tuesdays and Wednesdays after some grand prix events.

With so many back-to-back races in 2022, traditional venues like Barcelona or Silverstone weren’t possible as their appointments followed each other that week. However, by opting for the Imola , Austria , Hungary and Italy tests, Pirelli has managed to secure 17 days of testing with the single-seaters, for a total of 18 with a single day independently at Mugello .

The regulations allow 25 days in a season, including wet tests. The teams will be able to use their cars from this course, after having modified those from 2021 to adjust to Pirelli’s planning, which will represent a great advantage in being able to study the behavior of the tires under the new regulations.

The 18 days are divided between nine teams, and only Haas will not participate, as happened last season with Williams due to the costs of implementing modifications to a single-seater.

The program starts next week at Imola , with AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo, Alpine and Ferrari, the latter two with only one day each.

Those from Maranello will use their second day at Mugello on June 24, the Friday after the Canadian Grand Prix, while McLaren and Williams will spend two consecutive days in July at Spielberg after the Austrian GP. The same thing will happen here as in Imola, as Alpine and Red Bull will be present for only one day each.

Mercedes and Aston Martin have agreed to spend their two days testing in Hungary, just before the summer break. The last date for dry tire testing is reserved for Red Bull at Monza, after the Italian Grand Prix.

The days on which Pirelli will test the wet tires have yet to be confirmed, but the 2023 slick prototypes are expected to be in two Free Practice 2 sessions throughout the current season across all teams.
