Georgetown Free Outdoor Movies 2016: Washington DC

Georgetown Sunset Cinema Series offers a free outdoor cinema experience during the summer months in Washington DC with the panoramic backdrop of the sunset, the Potomac River and the Key Bridge. The 2016 Movies honor the National Park Service’s centennial by featuring iconic movies shot in national parks and monuments across the country, stopping in each decade from the 1960s to the 2000s. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring a picnic and a blanket (no chairs) and enjoy.

Dates and times: Tuesday, July 5 – August 2, 2016. Movies start at sunset; Get there at 7pm for the best seats and gifts.

Location: Georgetown Waterfront Park at the intersection of K / Water Street and Cecil Place, NW. The park offers a beautiful green space for recreation and contemplation of visitors. Bicyclists, skaters, and pedestrians have their own car-free trails with views of individual boaters, kayakers, and competitive teams, as well as Roosevelt Island and the magnificent Key Bridge.

Transportation and Parking: Georgetown is not accessible by Metrorail. The best way to get to the neighborhood is by taking the DC Circulator Bus using the Georgetown / Union Station or Rosslyn / Georgetown / Dupont Circle lines. See a guide to parking lots and lots in Georgetown.

Movie Calendar 2016

July 5 – Planet of the Apes (1968) – Rated G. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Arizona / Utah. An Air Force astronaut crash lands on a mysterious planet where it evolved, the dominating apes dominating a race of primitive humans.

July 12 – Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) – PG Rating. Devil’s Towner National Monument and Black Hills National Forest, Wyoming. After an encounter with the UFOs, a line worker is undoubtedly drawn to an isolated area in the desert where something spectacular is about to happen.

July 19 – ET the Extraterrestrial (1982) – PG Rating. National and State Parks of Redwood, California. In this classic sci-fi movie, an alien is stranded on Earth and discovered and befriended by a young man named Elliott. He and his brothers help ET to return home while trying to keep him hidden from his mother and the government.

July 26 – Thelma and Louise (1991) – Rated R. Canyonlands and Arches Nationals Parks, Utah. A housewife and a waitress go on a road trip and find themselves in trouble with the law.

August 2 – Into the Wild (2007) – Classified R. Denali National Park, Alaska. The biographical drama survival film is an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s 1996 non-fiction book about a trip to the Alaskan wilderness.
