The Ferrari reserve driver will get behind the wheel of the VF-22 at both Monza and the Circuit of the Americas, with current drivers Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen taking turns loaning their cars to the Italian in those sessions.

Giovinazzi last competed in F1 in 2021 before making the jump to Formula E with Dragon Penske Racing, but retaining his role as a test driver with the Ferrari team.

The Italian could also be a contender for a Haas seat in 2023 as Schumacher’s future at the team is uncertain while Magnussen is on a multi-year deal.

The transalpine driver commented: “I am very happy to have the opportunity to drive again in some official F1 sessions.

“In addition to driving in a simulator, it’s important to test a real car, so I’m looking forward to putting on my suit and helmet again. It will be an opportunity to gain confidence with the cars of this new generation, it’s the best way to be prepared if they call me as a pilot”.

“Driving on challenging circuits like Monza and COTA makes it even more exciting. I want to thank the Haas F1 Team and Scuderia Ferrari. I’m looking forward to contributing to the team that already had me in 2017.”

Team Principal Gunther Steiner added: “We are happy to welcome Antonio Giovinazzi to our team.

“Ferrari wanted to give Antonio miles in a current specification Formula 1 car over a race weekend and naturally we are delighted to be able to help. I am looking forward to seeing Antonio again and having him back in the paddock with us.” .

Giovinazzi joined Alfa in 2019 and was the first Italian driver to compete in Formula 1 full-time since the 2011 season. He scored 21 points in his three seasons before losing his seat to Zhou Guanyu.
