The W Series was one of the support categories of Formula 1 during the weekend of the Hungarian Grand Prix, and Lewis Hamilton took the opportunity to visit its paddock and chat with some of the women who compete in what is its third season of existence. .

The Briton felt more needed to be done to try to help W Series female drivers find opportunities to move up a category after winning this one.

“I’ve been following the W Series all year and these last ones too, and I wanted to try and go there and see the young, inspiring women,” explained Hamilton when asked about his visit during the Hungarian race weekend. , which he documented on his social networks.

“I’ve been watching his tests between sessions, and I’ve even seen his race today [in Hungary], so I really wanted to get closer,” said the Englishman. “For them, I think it’s great that we have the W Series, but we as a sport have to do a lot more for young girls starting out, and for these women, if there’s not a progression from there, from the W Series. “.

“It’s been three years, so we really have to work to try and create something. When you win this, do you go up to GP2 [F2] or whatever? We can definitely do a lot more to support these girls,” explained Hamilton.

Everything indicates that Jamie Chadwick will be the one to win the title for the third consecutive time in 2022, having won five of the six races of the season and having a lead of 75 points with only four weekends of competition remaining. .

However, despite his successes, Chadwick has struggled to find opportunities outside of the W Series, leading him to stay in the series longer than he originally expected.

Although the W Series has a prize pool to be distributed for all the drivers who compete, the British confessed at the end of last year that “it does not take that far” when trying to secure a competitive seat in championships such as Formula 2 and Formula 3 , the clearest prelude to F1.

The 24-year-old ultimately decided to return to the W Series in 2022, taking one of the slots at the newly created Jenner Racing.

Chadwick and classmate Abbi Pulling are among the final 10 drivers in contention for this year’s Aston Martin Autosport BRDC award, which aims to find and support the best British junior drivers.
