He becomes a father for the first time while having a heart transplant: Antonio and Samuel celebrate his birth on the same day

There are stories that touch your heart and move you because of how incredible they are. This is one of them. His name is Antonio Salvador and he is 39 years old. In mid-March he was with his wife, Ana, in the maternity dilation room of the Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital in Madrid, when he received a call from his cardiologists, informing him that, from the National Transplant Organization (ONT), They had been advised that there was a compatible donation and that he was the indicated candidate for transplantation.

So she had to miss the birth of her first child to move to the operating room of the same health center where she received a new heart, while her first child was born by caesarean section, almost at the same time. The two are well and, as he himself assures, it will be a date to celebrate, since he has been born again on the same day that Samuel came into the world.

“Two special moments at the same time”

Antonio explains that when he entered the operating room, he had not yet been a father, but he spoke with his wife by video call and we both wish each other luck. But ” when I woke up I had a double satisfaction”:

“The truth is that we were joined by two very special moments that we had been waiting for a long time. It took me a few minutes to make the decision because it involved missing the birth of my first child. However, in less than an hour they were preparing me in the building at al side for intervention “.

The truth is that “each one faced their moment separately, but with the joy of knowing that everything was going to be fine.” These are the words of Ana, Salvador’s mother, who adds that “I couldn’t believe that after 10 years we were going to receive the most wonderful things in our lives at the same time that Antonio received the life he needed.”

“Our son Samuel came with a heart under his arm for his father.”

“Let’s start celebrating three birthdays”

Antonio had hypertrophic heart disease, a hereditary disease that causes thickening of the myocardium and makes it difficult for blood to leave the heart, causing him to have to work harder to pump it. Dr. Manuel Ruiz Fernández, a doctor from the Cardiac Surgery Service who performed the transplant, points out that “many patients with this type of heart disease end up in terminal heart failure and, as in Antonio’s case, heart transplantation is the only solution .”

“That day he was born again and his son was also born, surely they will remember him for a lifetime”

Eduardo Zatarain, assistant physician at the hospital’s Cardiology Service, adds that “fortunately everything has turned out very well. Antonio made the right decision as his heart was progressively deteriorating. Now he will be able to lead a relatively normal life.”

It is true that, although there were moments of nerves, everything has gone perfectly. Antonio has admitted that “it took me a few minutes to make the decision because it meant missing the birth of my first child” , but now his greatest illusion is “to get out of the hospital to be able to meet his son in person and be able to hug him”, since at the moment he only knows you by videoconference.

In addition, he explains that in 2002 he had a cardiac arrest when he left the subway and it was a nurse from the Gregorio Marañón Hospital who revived him on that occasion. Since that day, he has always said that he had two birthdays “because that day they saved my life .” So now, he assures that “after receiving the heart transplant and my son was born that same day, we are going to start celebrating three birthdays.”
