Severe earthquake on the island of Sumatra: Two dead and 20 injured – “They all fled the house”

The island state of Indonesia is repeatedly affected by earthquakes* because of its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. A few minutes earlier, a severe earthquake off the coast had already forced residents to leave their homes. “We all fled our home,” 36-year-old Yudi Prama Agustino told AFP. “I have a one-year-old baby, so in a panic I pushed the stroller out of the house.”

Many buildings in West Sumatra province were damaged. The tremors also triggered a landslide in West Pasaman County. Several houses were buried by the mudslide, but it’s still unclear if there were any other casualties, the JPNN website quoted local civil defense officials as saying.
