Holiday island Mallorca: Incidence shoots up to 127 – bitter party news for tourists

0

The corona numbers on Mallorca and in the rest of Spain are rising again sharply, mainly because of the delta variant. The happenings on the holiday island are followed with excitement.

Palma – Mallorca should be like it was before Corona immediately. But it is not that easy. The federal government reassigned all of Spain, including the Balearic Islands, as a risk area on July 9th. Meanwhile, various reports have been made about the mood on “Malle”. Which only shows the status of the holiday island.

The 7-day incidence here – as of Thursday, July 8 – was 127.2. The dpa correspondents Ralf Petzold and Jan-Uwe Ronneburger spoke of a changed island the day before. The “Schinkenstrasse” is pretty empty for the time of year. It is true that the usual party music resounds through the alley – “but there is no real atmosphere,” they write.

Corona in Mallorca: Hundreds storm British Ham Street after the EM game

That was different the night before. England played against Germany, and hundreds of British vacationers disregarded the corona rules after their team’s EM victory, reports the local Mallorca newspaper . Hugs in bulk and without a mask: The previously empty Punta Ballena – something like the “British Ham Street” – was unrecognizable.

The bars were full and there was “no stopping” after the match. “Hundreds of vacationers filled the party mile, sang and drank together,” reports the Mallorca Zeitung .

EM parties in Mallorca: “Endanger the travel plans of the following tourists”

The police were unable to get the crowd under control, it said. Reporter Christian Thiele is not happy about this: “With their rampant behavior, the football fans not only endanger themselves, the island population and the travel plans of subsequent tourists, but also clearly violate the Corona measures,” he comments.

Despite the rising Corona numbers on Mallorca, no drop in bookings

The vaccination campaign has also made good progress in Spain. Therefore, the increasing number of infections did not cause panic, according to the dpa correspondents. In Spain it is currently mostly unvaccinated and the group between the ages of 16 and 30. Only a few would have to go to hospital afterwards, and the death rate remained low. According to its own information, the German travel industry has not yet recorded any decline in bookings.

A renewed classification as a risk area by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) would have hardly any practical effects for Mallorca vacationers from Germany. For the summer season it would be “at most a damage to the image”, they write.

Corona risk areas in Spain: Mallorca is not yet one of them, but: clubs remain closed

In Spain, the number of infections had risen dramatically in the last few weeks. So far, however, only 6 of the 17 Spanish regions – including the holiday areas Catalonia and Andalusia – and the exclave of Ceuta in North Africa have been considered risk areas. The Balearic Islands with Mallorca and the Canary Islands were not included until July 9th.

Mallorca is still a long way from pre-Corona normality: According to information from the Majorca Daily Bulletin , the government of the Balearic Islands has canceled further planned opening steps for the time being. Big clubs stay closed. (frs with material from dpa)
