How Compartamos Banco will protect itself against possible defaults

Compartamos Banco , a subsidiary of Gentera , expects challenging months and will take care that all the productive credit it generates in the coming months does not fall into past due loans in the face of a complex economic scenario.

Despite the fact that inflation will continue to trend upwards in the coming months, Patricio Diez Bonilla, General Director of Compartamos, said at a press conference that so far he does not see worrying signs or that they limit the growth of credit placement. In fact, they expect that this year they can grow their portfolio between 15 and 17% and an Intercam analysis showed that they can close the year with a portfolio of 57.2 billion pesos.

“The first trend we see is that the average ticket increases in times of inflation like the one we are experiencing; the focus (of the bank) is the origination and care of the loan portfolio, not only in inflationary conditions,” he said during the presentation of Your results.

The banker explained that when there is inflation, microentrepreneurs demand higher amounts of credit due to the increase in the prices of their inventories as raw materials. Although he highlighted the good behavior of the first half of the year, he warned of risks in the second half of the year.

To shield themselves from this challenging environment, Diez Bonilla said that they will help themselves with technology to reduce operating costs in cases of non-payment or lower demand from their clients by 2023, when the Mexican economy is expected to enter a recession.

In addition, in August, Gentera will launch a social bonus with which it hopes to raise between 2,000 and 2,500 million pesos to provide more financing.

“The social bonus must be channeled towards a productive loan for micro-entrepreneurs in Mexico and what we seek is to generate an impact in the communities where we operate,” said Diez Bonilla.

In the second quarter of 2022, Compartamos Banco had a growth of 39.5% compared to the same period of 2021, with 29,974 million pesos. The firm managed to grow its client portfolio 8.5% by adding 2.53 million people.
