How much do we know about science?

What image do Spaniards have of science and technology? According to the results of theIV National Survey on Social Perception of Science, which the FECYT has just announced,almost half of the population(45.4%) consideracceptable your scientific training.

Regarding theinterestfor science and technology ishigher among the younger populationand decreases as age increases. 15.4% of young people between 15 and 24 years old are interested in scientific-technological issues, a proportion that drops to 4.6% among those over 64 years of age.

The survey also reveals that news interests vary significantly depending on thesex. Men cite topics related to science and technology more than women (13.1% compared to 6.1%). However, medicine and health top the list of women’s preferences (35.2%).

On the other hand,53.54% of the people surveyed consider that the benefits of science and technology are greater than its harms, and 26.9% that both aspects are balanced. Regarding the preferences for the research carried out in our country, citizens are clear:medicine and health, energy sources and the environment, in this order.

Thesource of informationcited mostly by all respondents is theTV(82.3%), but when the responses are analyzed by age segment, the large presence ofInternet as an information source for young people between 15 and 24 years old (61.6%) and between 25 and 34 years old (50.4%).

The findings of the new survey speak offour profilesdepending on the attitude towards science:“enthusiastic pro-scientific” people(16.1%),“pro-scientific measures” or moderate(32.3%),“misinformed criticism”(16.6%) and“misinformed”(20.0%), in addition to a population without a defined position (15.0%).
