How to make phone calls from the computer?

As different technology companies are concerned with developing increasingly sophisticated and surprising mobile phones , it is clear that the use of these types of devices has succeeded in replacing landlines in homes.

Without going any further, just a few months ago, we knew from the hands of the National Institute of Statistics (after the publication of its Survey on Equipment and Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Homes ), that in our country almost all of the 99.6% of households have a telephone, either mobile or landline. However, while it is true that 73.7% have both types of terminals, 24.7% exclusively use the mobile phone to communicate from home.

Furthermore, we know that 89.9% of Spanish households with at least one member between 16 and 74 years of age have some type of computer (be it laptop, desktop, or digital tablet).

If we combine both habits – the use of mobile telephony and having a computer at home with Internet access – we realize that, within the new reality in which we have been immersed for just a few months, making and receiving calls from home has become something basic in our day to day, especially if we work from home.

Depending on our type of work, if we make daily use of our mobile phone, and we are also forced to use the computer during our working hours, we may not want to use the mobile device all day. If so, our computer offers us a unique possibility: make phone calls without the need for a mobile phone pressing our ear.

What do you need to make phone calls from the computer?

Obviously, a computer is required, although this time it does not matter if you use Windows or macOS, a laptop or a desktop computer. However, if you already have a Mac and an iPhone, it is very likely that you have already discovered that both devices work very well together. Although there are also other options that we should know about.

It is perfectly possible to make calls from our computer using a microphone and listen to the conversation through the speakers integrated in it. However, when there are children at home, it may be preferable to opt for a headset with a built-in microphone, which helps a lot when it comes to making calls better heard, and provides us with greater privacy.

When it comes to the software that we should use, the truth is that we also have many options. For example, if we have a Mac and an iPhone with the same Apple ID, we will only have to open the ‘FaceTime’ application for macOS. One of its main advantages is that it not only offers us the possibility of making calls from our Mac, but we can even answer those received by the iPhone.

In case you are using Windows, the ‘Your Phone’ application, which is now part of the operating system developed by Microsoft, is capable of making calls through an Android phone that we have linked previously. And it works almost as smoothly as macOS and an iPhone.

However, there are also other options not integrated into our favorite operating system, and that can be equally helpful. Skype , for example, becomes one of the most popular trusted options, compatible with both Windows and macOS. Although there is a drawback: if you want to call a landline or mobile from this application it has a cost, so you will need some credit or get a subscription. In addition, the price will also vary depending on the country you need to call.

But if you don’t want to install an application on your computer, you can also use a service that works directly through the Web browser. Keku becomes one of the most suitable options, as it is quite similar to Skype and is considered quite safe and reliable. Although it also has a downside: at the moment it is only available for the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
