How to prevent flea bites

0

With the arrival of spring, flea bites multiply. These pesky insects bite both humans and pets and carry disease. In addition, some dogs can be allergic to these bites, so you should be especially careful. If you live with pets at home, it is essential that you go to the vet to prevent these insects from sneaking into your home. Remember that all your pets should be treated for fleas, even if none are infested. Keep an eye out!

Visit the vet regularly

If your dog has fleas or you think it could be infested, your vet should treat you to control them. There are oral or injection treatments, although you can also try topical medications (creams or lotions) that pass directly from your pet’s skin to the blood. Also, some pills only prevent flea eggs from growing, so you will need to use another product to kill adult fleas.

If you live with a cat, there are injections that control fleas for a period of up to six months. However, it is best that you go to your trusted veterinarian to recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Wear a flea collar

Although your vet should recommend the most appropriate treatment, some flea collars are truly effective. In fact, some flea collars require a veterinary prescription. Follow the instructions on the collar and, if you can, use a flea and tick shampoo when grooming your pet.

Also, you should never use a dog flea collar on cats. Remember that each pet requires different care and needs.

Keep an eye on your pet’s coat

You should check your pet’s coat daily. Not only to detect flea or tick bites, but also to discover possible diseases. Use a flea comb (you can find it at any pet store) and move it slowly through its fur. If your pet has fleas, you will see small black dots on his skin or even see them jump when you pass the comb.

Also, if you notice that your pet is scratching excessively or biting himself, it is most likely that he has fleas. Watch their behavior!
