Wind speeds of up to 175 kilometers per hour and heavy rain: a hurricane moves further west over Mexico, but loses its force.

Tecolutla – Hurricane “Grace” has lost some of its power over the Mexican east coast. After the cyclone hit land in the state of Veracruz on Saturday night (local time), it was downgraded to a category 2 hurricane, the Mexican weather service announced.

Nevertheless, “Grace” still moved with winds of up to 175 kilometers per hour over the east of the country.

The weather service forecast heavy rain for large parts of the country and warned of landslides and floods. In the state of Veracruz, civil protection declared a state of emergency in 22 localities. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called on residents of the particularly affected areas to exercise caution.

“Grace” was a tropical storm on Thursday over the Mexican peninsula Yucatán, which is popular with holidaymakers. It caused damage and extensive power outages, but people were not harmed. Before its second passage over Mexico, which had now begun, the tropical cyclone “Grace” had gained strength and had again been upgraded to a hurricane. dpa
