The relocation of production chains opens a window of opportunity for North America because “millions of jobs” in Asia -China and Taiwan, to name a few examples- represent a window of opportunity for all of North America, especially for Mexico, he said Thursday. the United States ambassador to the country, Ken Salazar .

“I think of places like Sonora, Monterrey”, where this “great opportunity” opens up to attract companies seeking to move from Asia, added the diplomat during his participation in the North Capital Forum, organized by the US-Mexico Foundation.

The ambassador recalled that President Joe Biden launched legislation that promotes the production of semiconductors that will also benefit Mexico.

The US government recently invited Mexico to work together to strengthen supply chains in the region, something that the Mexican government, in the voice of Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, accepted.

In 2026 the T-MEC will have a litmus test, since a review will be carried out, with a view to extending the trade agreement.

Although Ambassador Salazar is confident that the trade agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada, which he described as “the most modern trade agreement in history,” will continue for many years.

He highlighted the importance of having a dispute settlement mechanism regardless of its nature, since there are differences between the three trading partners.

Salazar highlighted that North America represents a market of around half a billion people.

Among the challenges that must be faced in order to fully exploit relocation is the training of the workforce and education.

Ambassador Salazar pointed out that work has to be done on migration, for it to happen, he said, long-term solutions have to be found in favor of migrants.

“The challenge is the same: people who want to work and we have to make sure they have the right training and education to make it happen,” said Ken Salazar.
