INAI orders Pemex to make emails between officials and Vitol transparent

The state-owned Pemex will have to release a series of emails between some of its officials and a representative of the Vitol company, which has been accused of bribing some companies, including the Mexican oil company.

The oil company must deliver the copy of five emails that were exchanged between an official of Pemex Etileno and Vitol during January 2014 and July 2019, due to a resolution of the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data ( INAI) issued yesterday.

The resolution came after a private individual made a request to have access to the exchange of information between the two companies, but to which Pemex responded by reserving the information.

A few months ago, the US Justice Department announced that the Dutch Vitol, one of the largest energy marketers, had given large bribes to companies in Brazil, Ecuador and Mexico, which would involve senior Pemex officials.

The Dutch has accepted the accusations and has paid around 160 million dollars to American and Brazilian authorities.

The bribes to the Mexican state company would have taken place during the past administration, of President Enrique Peña Nieto, and would have reached officials of the current federal government, which has put the fight against corruption as a standard.

PMI Comercio Internacional, the commercial arm of the state company, suspended the business it had with the trading company and the Mexican government has started a process of renegotiation of some of the contracts.
