Industrial production in Mexico had a 36.6% rebound in April compared to the same month of 2020 thanks to the strong increase registered in the manufacturing industries (52%), construction (45%) and mining (5.5%) , reported this Friday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Electricity generation had a fall of 3.1% in the reference period.

The strong rebound in April is due to the fact that in the same month of 2020 the coronavirus pandemic led to the closure of all non-essential activities, especially affecting manufacturing and construction.

In the first four months of the year, industrial production accumulates a growth of 4.8% compared to the same period in 2020.

In the four-month period, manufacturing accumulated an increase of 8.8%, construction rose 2.1%, partially offset by the fall in the generation and transmission of electricity, water and gas (-5.3%) and mining with -0.9% ).

If April is compared with last March, industrial production had a decrease of 0.2%.

“After 10 consecutive months of progress, in April 2021 the monthly indicator of industrial activity decreased 0.2% month-over-month. In this way, it fell back in its recovery and remained at -2.7% compared to its level before the start of the pandemic February 2020 “, explained on Twitter the president of Inegi, Julio A. Santaella.

The coronavirus pandemic prompted authorities to order a halt to all non-essential activities in April and May 2020.

Industrial activity plummeted 10% last year.
