Instagram announces Only Fans-style subscription model

The Instagram social network announced a series of updates, among which the subscription model stands out, which seeks to help content creators increase their income, in addition to making the application more attractive to users, compared to its competitor TikTok, the Chinese social network.

The CEO of Meta, which owns Instagram, Mark Zuckerberg, detailed that creators will have a destination for subscribers-only content on their profiles, publish exclusive Reels and share news posts that only they can access.

“With the incredible opportunity of blockchain technology, they can now take advantage of new tools to earn income, and fans can support their favorite creators by purchasing digital collectibles (art, images and videos, music or trading cards) as non-fungible tokens (NFT)” ,

Subscriptions to the app will allow creators to monetize and get closer to their most engaged followers by offering exclusive content and experiences.

Although this new subscription model is only in initial alpha testing in January, tens of thousands of creators in the US now have access to subscriptions for the app.

Change in photo view

In addition, the app confirmed that it will start showing vertical photos posted on the social network with a 16:9 aspect ratio and full screen, instead of the usual 4:5, “in one or two weeks.”

The platform began to propose certain changes in its design a few weeks ago, when it announced that it would focus its strategy on ‘reels’ instead of continuing with its usual commitment to static ‘feed’ publications.

However, at the end of July, the Meta-owned social network stopped testing the redesign of its ‘app’, which included changes such as a full-screen ‘feed’ or the transition of all videos on the platform to the ‘ reels’ after receiving criticism from its users.

The CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, confirmed in his personal profile and in an ‘Ask me anything’ session, where he answers questions from platform users, that he maintains his commitment to prioritizing full-screen content.
