This June 29 is the International Day of the Tropics 2021 , a day promoted by the United Nations to recognize their great diversity and publicize the challenges and opportunities faced by the peoples that inhabit them. Why this day and what are the tropics?

According to the United Nations, this day takes place because on June 29, 2014, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, launched the first Report on the State of the Tropics. It offers a unique perspective on this increasingly important region.

Thus, coinciding with the anniversary of the publication of the aforementioned report, the General Assembly designated June 29 as the International Day of the Tropics through its resolution A / RES / 70/267 approved on June 14, 2017.

What is the goal of this day?

As we have highlighted, this day is based on raising awareness of the specific challenges facing the tropics, the far- reaching consequences of the problems that affect the tropical zone of the world and the need.

The aim is to raise awareness and underline the important role that countries in the tropics will play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

What are the tropics?

It applies to different senses, such as what is known as the intertropical, torrid or tropical zone and can extend beyond the parallels of Cancer and Capricorn.

According to the United Nations, topography and other factors contribute to climate variation , and thus we can say that tropical regions are warm and the seasons are little marked by changes in temperatures.

The areas closest to the equator have prevalence of rains. The tropics face various challenges that require special attention, such as climate change. Well, they cover 40% of its entire surface , being made up of great wealth in terms of its biological diversity.

Thus, on the International Day of the Tropics 2021, it should be noted that by 2050 the majority of the planet’s inhabitants will live in the tropics and, specifically, almost two-thirds of the child population.

And based on the region’s high levels of poverty, there are more malnourished people in the tropics than in other parts of the world.
