(LONDON) – Their fate was in abeyance: Queen Elizabeth’s beloved corgis, inseparable dogs from the sovereign who died Thursday at the age of 96, have finally found a home: that of her son Prince Andrew.
A spokesman for Prince Andrew, the queen’s third son, and his ex-wife the Duchess of York Sarah announced on Sunday that they would take care of Muick and Sandy, the two corgis who survived the queen.
Andrew is sometimes portrayed as the queen’s “favorite son”, but has withdrawn from the monarchy after allegations of sexual assault in the United States, which he ended by paying millions of dollars.
It was he who gave his mother the little puppies. Muick and Sandy, the last representatives of the more than 30 corgis that she had, accompanied her during the pandemic, according to the person in charge of her clothing, Angela Kelly.
Muick arrived in Windsor in early 2021 to accompany the queen, then confined like all Britons, with another pup named Fergus.
Fergus passed away weeks later at the age of five months, in the dark times following the death of her husband Prince Philip.
To replace him, Andrés and his daughters, Princesses Beatriz and Eugenia, offered Elizabeth II little Sandy on the occasion of her 95th birthday.
The queen’s love for these little dogs dates back to 1944, when her parents offered her her first corgi for her 18th birthday, Susan, from which most of the dogs she later had descended.
Elizabeth II cared as much as possible for her own dogs, who accompanied her on her weekends in Windsor and lived in her private apartments. She fed them when she had time and liked to take them out for walks.
His love of corgis was celebrated at his 70th anniversary platinum jubilee festivities in June, with a 70-corgi rally at Balmoral and a corgi race at Musselburgh Racecourse.
