marte-3d After directing one of the most successful blockbusters on planet Earth, the director of Avatar has embarked on a new challenge: taking part in the 3D filming of Mars .

James Cameron is helping build a 3D camera for the next Red Planet-bound rover , launching next year. Apparently, NASA planned to film the entire mission in 3D, but due to constantly increasing budget and project delays, it was finally decided to scrap these cinematic plans. But last January, Cameron met with the administrator of the US space agency, Charles Bolden, and managed to change his mind, according to Collider.com.

“It is a very ambitious mission. It is a very exciting mission . Scientists are going to answer many important questions about the past and potentially future habitability of Mars,” said Cameron.

After the meeting, NASA committed to investing in the camera, which will sit on top of the rover’s mast and shoot at ten frames per second . Joy Crisp, a project scientist at the Mars Science Laboratory , has assured that “I could shoot a movie with the image of clouds moving in the sky or a swirl of moving dust; as long as the rover circulates, it will be able to film.”
