Light vehicle sales in Mexico had their worst January since 2012, registering 78,585 units sold, in the first month of 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

With these results, the sales registered in January 2022 were lower than those of the same month of 2021, by 3.7%.

This means the worst start to the year for the light vehicle automotive industry in terms of sales in the last 10 years, since, in January 2012, 75,297 units were sold.

Compared to sales recorded in January 2020, before the pandemic, January 2022 sales are down 25%. In addition, they are also lower than the 83,612 units projected by the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA).

2021 ended with 1,014,680 units sold, just exceeding the 950,063 units of 2020. All this in the midst of a global shortage of semiconductors, necessary for the manufacture of vehicles, and disruptions in supply chains.

By 2022, AMDA expects car sales in the Mexican domestic market to be 1,050,000 units.
