The break-in into Dresden’s Green Vault in November 2019 not only shook the art world. There is still no trace of the booty – the urgent suspects have been caught.

Dresden / Berlin – All urgent suspects in connection with the spectacular theft of jewels from the historic Green Vault in Dresden in November 2019 have been caught.

Saxon officials arrested a 23-year-old in an apartment in Berlin-Treptow on Thursday morning, as the police and public prosecutor in Dresden announced. He was accused of serious gang theft and arson and was brought before an investigating judge in Dresden that afternoon.

The man, who, like the alleged accomplices, comes from a large family of Arab origin in Berlin, has been sentenced to a juvenile prison term for stealing gold coins from the Berlin Bode Museum, but was on the loose until legal action was taken because of his appeal. From the investigator’s point of view, all six directly involved in the Dresden coup are identified and arrested, as Chief Public Prosecutor Jürgen Schmidt said.

They came with an ax

Two men broke into the residential palace on November 25, 2019, punched holes in a showcase in the treasury museum with an ax and tore out the jewels fastened in it. Since then, there has been no trace of the roughly a dozen pieces of jewelery made from diamonds and brilliant-cut diamonds from the 17th and 18th centuries, which were of hardly estimable value.

The investigators are convinced that the break-in is due to the Remmo clan, which is also held responsible for crimes such as the theft of the 100 kilogram Big Maple Leaf gold coin from the Bode Museum in 2017.

Five urgent suspects were arrested in Berlin in November and December 2020 and May 2021. The two 25-year-olds, one 28- and two 22-year-olds are in custody. As part of this, one of them is also serving a youth sentence for stealing gold coins.

The Dresden Soko “Epaulette” is still looking for four possible helpers who have since been identified and who spied out the crime scene at the end of November and thus may have been involved in the preparation of the theft of jewels. dpa
