The search for missing people in the rubble of the collapsed skyscraper in Miami continues: US President Joe Biden made himself a picture of it on site.
Miami – US President Joe Biden visited the site of the accident around a week after the collapse of a twelve-story skyscraper in Maimi (Florida). In doing so, he spoke to relatives. “You’re going through hell,” said Biden afterwards. He emphasized that the relatives knew that the chances of survival were dwindling every day and were dealing with it “realistically”, according to the US President.
“It’s bad to lose someone. But the difficult thing, the really difficult thing, is not knowing whether someone survived or not, ”said the 78-year-old in Miami.
House collapse in Miami: 18 people were found dead from the rubble
Before Biden turned to the press, he was informed of the current status by the emergency services. According to this, 18 dead people have so far been rescued from the rubble of the collapsed house. According to the authorities, these included two children. Almost 150 people are currently still missing.
On Thursday (June 30th, 2021) the rescue work had to be interrupted because the statics of the collapsed house caused problems. There was further danger of collapse, as Daniella Levine, mayor of Miami-Dade district, said. Alan Cominsky, head of the local fire department, emphasized that experts had continuously monitored the condition of the building and that the search stop was inevitable. After several hours, the search for missing persons finally resumed.

Joe Biden praised the commitment of the emergency services: “What they do is incredible.” The mission is not only dangerous, but also an enormous psychological burden. Fireman Cominsky had previously stated that, among other things, “human remains” had been found in the rubble. However, these have not yet been identified.
Miami: Experts warned of defects in the collapsed house
A few days ago, an inspection report from 2018 became public after numerous media reports in the USA had reported on it. In it, experts warned of deficiencies in the statics of the residential complex, which is also known as Champlain Towers South. In the report, the experts referred, among other things, to deficiencies in the building’s concrete and listed measures that were necessary in the event of a renovation.
So far it is unclear what caused the house to collapse. Experts see the weather and the extreme heat currently prevailing in the USA as a possible explanation. The investigation is ongoing. (do with AFP / dpa)
