Kentuck Knob: A Frank Lloyd Wright Home in Chalk Hill, PA

0

Ten miles southwest of famous Fallingwater, along with a winding mountain road, is a second home designed by noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Kentuck Knob, blending flawlessly into its surroundings, is an excellent example of Wright’s organic architecture. Commissioned in 1953 and completed in 1956 for the Hagan family of Uniontown, Pennsylvania (from Hagan Ice Cream), Kentuck Knob represents the achievement of Wright’s 70-year career.

Kentuck Knob, also known as the Hagan House, is based on the Usonia model, typically a single, compact floor plan based on a modular grid system. In this case, the module is an equilateral triangle and is constructed of native stone, tidal cypress, and copper. Interesting features include the use of radiant heat on concrete floors, a ‘workspace’ instead of a kitchen, and a flat gable roof. The house stands out for its quality, impeccable condition and harmonious connection with the rural mountain site in which it is located.

The beautiful interior of the Kentuck Knob, both expansive and intimate, is the setting for the remarkable collection of post-WWII historical artifacts and sculptures from its current owners, Great Britain Lord and Lady Palumbo, who are dedicated patrons of the arts at home. and abroad. Spectacular views and beautiful scenery also combine to make Kentuck Knob worth the visit.
