Kishida before election as the new head of government of Japan

In Japan, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is making way for his successor Fumio Kishidas – who was previously Foreign Minister under ex-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Tokyo – Japan's outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has dissolved his cabinet, paving the way for Fumio Kishida's election as his successor.

The election of the 64-year-old on Monday at an extraordinary parliamentary session is considered a formality, as the coalition parties have the majority of the seats. Kishida, who was foreign minister for many years under the former right-wing conservative Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, wants to present his cabinet after his election as the new head of government.

As early as November, Kishida had to lead his ruling Liberal Democratic Party LDP in parliamentary elections. Under Suga, the party's poll numbers fell significantly in the wake of the Corona crisis. After only a year in office, Suga recently threw in the towel. dpa
