General Motors confirmed that the new Chevrolet Equinox EV SUV will be produced at the Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila plant, where it already assembles a gasoline version of the same model.

“We are at an evolutionary point where electric vehicles will be the trend for the next generation of customers, and the Chevrolet Equinox EV will lead this charge for us,” General Motors CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. “With the flexibility of GM’s Ultium platform, we are bringing vehicles to market at almost any price point and for any purpose.”

The American manufacturer announced in 2021 an investment of 1,000 million dollars to reconfigure the northern plant, which in the last five years has been focused on the production of SUVs, so that it could produce electric models from 2023.

The first electric model confirmed for the plant is the one whose gasoline version has also been assembled there since 2018. The Blazer EV, which will be sold in the markets of the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be assembled at the Ramos Arizpe plant, Coahuila, at from 2023.

In the US market, the model will be available in the fall of 2023 and will start at around $30,000 for the entry package. “It is expected to be the most affordable electric car in its class,” the automaker said in a statement.

General Motors confirmed that it will market the Chevrolet Equinox EV in Mexico from 2024 with “an accessible price”. The exact date, available packages, equipment and prices for the Mexican market will be communicated later.

The Equinox EV will be mounted on the Ultium platform and will be available with a General Motors-estimated range of up to 300 miles on a full charge. It will have a limited warranty of eight years/160,000 km.

It will feature a standard front-wheel drive system with an estimated 210 HP and 242 pound-feet of torque. In addition, it will also be available with an eAWD system of 290 HP and 346 pound-feet of torque.

Compared to the current Chevrolet Equinox, the electric version will include a 17.7-inch infotainment screen, driver assistance technologies, as well as available Super Cruise for compatible roads.

The American manufacturer confirmed that it will continue to produce the gasoline versions of the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer, as well as engines and transmissions at the northern plant. Currently, the Ramos Arizpe complex employs 5,600 people directly and, in addition to production for the domestic market, exports to more than 40 countries.
