LAST MINUTE: Rogelio Hernández, president of the National Hydrocarbons Commission, resigns from his position

Rogelio Hernández Cázares resigned as president of the National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH). In a couple of documents from the Ministry of the Interior it is read that the position of head of the regulator has become vacant.

Hernández Cázares left the organization on August 31. Sources told Expansión that the former commissioner will continue within the federal government, but did not provide further details, and ruled out that the departure was due to disagreements with the federal administration.

The CNH communications office did not respond to a request for comment.

The official was in charge of the hydrocarbons market regulator since November 2019. With his departure, the body’s plenary session will not be able to continue operating, but President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has already sent a list of three candidates to the Chamber of Senators to appoint a new incumbent who would conclude functions in 2026.

The documents add that the senators will evaluate three possible replacements: Agustín Díaz, an economist who has held various public positions in Tabasco, the president’s home state; Romeo Rojas, an engineer who has passed through Pemex; and José Sánchez, an economist who holds public office.

The National Hydrocarbons Commission grabbed the spotlight earlier this year, when the president’s constitutional reform proposal proposed the agency’s disappearance.

By law, the CNH is required to regulate the energy market without making distinctions. In recent months, the CNH has fined state-owned Pemex for not complying with its development plans in priority fields.

In addition, the CNH evaluates and approves the exploration and production plans of Pemex, as well as those of foreign and private participants in the market.
