LAST MINUTE: The AIFA grows 42% in passengers thanks to the routes of Cancun, Mérida and new destinations

Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) served 42% more passengers during August , a growth achieved as a result of the increase in some of its higher volume routes, coupled with the addition of new routes that it has added since July.

During the past month, the new airport received 49,919 passengers, which represented a growth of 14,802 in absolute terms compared to July. Almost 70% of this growth came from two routes: Cancún and Mérida , which at the date of the cut were in first and third place in terms of traffic, respectively.

In addition, almost a third of the growth stemmed from the entry into operation of four new routes: Acapulco, Huatulco, Mexicali and Oaxaca .

The growth of Cancún and Mérida derives from the fact that more airlines have become interested in operating in the destinations.

During the start of operations of the AIFA, Volaris was the first airline to offer flights to Cancun, which since last August 15 already competes with Aeroméxico .

Similarly, Aeroméxico had Mérida among its initial routes, which recently also began to be operated by Volaris. In addition, Viva Aerobus also added a connection to Cancun that was added to its initial flights from Guadalajara and Monterrey.

On the new routes side, the flight to Mexicali –operated by Volaris– had the highest passenger traffic, followed by the new connection with Huatulco , operated by the same airline.

AIFA has benefited from a plan that seeks to increase flights at the airport from 12 to 100 daily operations. As part of this strategy, Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus and Volaris announced new routes, while international airlines opened operations, such as the Dominican Arajet – which began operations on September 22 – and Copa Airlines , which today began its AIFA operations with a route to Panama.
