Workers at the Mazda plant in Salamanca, Guanajuato, elected the 'Benito Pablo Juárez García' union of the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) to represent their interests against the automaker.
The result at the Mazda plant in Salamanca left out the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM), which until before the vote had the representation of the 5,200 workers of the complex. In February, the CTM also lost the representation of the workers at the General Motors complex in Silao, Guanajuato.
Mazda produces four high-demand models at the Mexican plant: Mazda2, Mazda3, CX-3 and CX-30. The production of the latter began in early October, and required a year of planning, an investment of 60 million dollars and the creation of 100 new jobs.
The consultation carried out on Monday is part of the new demands established in the Federal Labor Law after the 2019 Labor Reform, which now requires all work centers that have unionized personnel to legitimize their CCTs before May 1, next year, taking care of it the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration.
This process of legitimation of CCT, which must be carried out by means of a free and secret ballot, has favored union alternation. On February 1 and 2, union elections were held at the General Motors factory in Silao, Guanajuato, which also displaced the CTM and gave way to the National Independent Union of Workers of the Automotive Industry (SINTTIA) .
