Lauterbach: "If the children are not vaccinated, face-to-face classes in autumn will be difficult"

Lauterbach is in favor of students returning to face-to-face classes as quickly as possible. But that would be difficult without vaccinating the children.

Berlin (dpa) – In view of the falling corona numbers, SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach has spoken out in favor of the full resumption of regular classes in schools. “We have to come back to face-to-face classes,” said Lauterbach
of the world”. This is possible if tests are also carried out regularly in face-to-face classes – this has worked well so far.

Due to the lower number of infections, a number of countries have already returned to regular operation from alternating and distance teaching. On Monday, the schools in North Rhine-Westphalia resumed classroom teaching in full class, as did Lower Saxony, Saarland and Hamburg.

In Brandenburg this initially only applies to elementary schools. The only exception is the city of Brandenburg / Havel, where the numbers are still too high. The secondary schools should also follow in a week. The mask and test requirement still applies. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the state with the lowest incidence nationwide, the students returned to class last Thursday for face-to-face lessons.

At the same time, Lauterbach warned of the situation after the summer vacation: “In the fall, classroom lessons will be difficult if the children are not vaccinated,” the health expert pointed out. That is why it is important to bear in mind that the children need to be vaccinated “if we allow classroom lessons to take place in autumn without masks and spaces”.
