Leclerc admits his "mistake" on the pole lap in Singapore

0

Qualifying for the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix had everything from a crazy fight for pole position to rain that threatened to wet the asphalt, as it did in the third free practice session, but the real prominence was taken by Charles Leclerc, who beat all his rivals to continue hoping to extend the fight for the world title with Max Verstappen.

The Monegasque from Ferrari garnered a new first position in the session that defines the positions for Sunday’s grid in a difficult Marina Bay, although he had to overcome the adversities presented by the weather conditions and a combative Fernando Alonso, who even placed on the temporary pole.

Once he got out of the car, Leclerc was clear in explaining how Saturday went, although he is aware that the difficult part will come in the race: “It was a very, very difficult qualifying in Q1 and Q2 with the intermediates. Then in Q3 we didn’t know what to do and we went for the soft at the last moment and it paid off.”

“It was very, very difficult. I made a mistake on the last lap, so I thought we wouldn’t make it, but it was enough, so I’m very, very happy,” commented the Monaco driver. “Especially considering the Friday we’ve been through, we’ve had a very limited amount of laps due to some problems, but we recovered well. So we don’t have a lot of data for the race, but if we do the perfect execution, I’m sure we can win”.

Charles Leclerc must finish at least in the top seven to mathematically ensure his permanence in the fight for the title, although he recognizes that the most important thing is to go race by race.

Regarding his lap in the final Q3, he expressed that it was “very special”, especially due to the conditions found on the night track: “It has been very, very special. All classifications on urban circuits are at the limit, and even more when it’s wet.

“There are some parts of the track that are wet so you lose the rear, but overall it was a pretty good lap and everything went well,” said the second-placed driver in the 2022 F1 season.
