Leclerc takes pole in Spain in a crazy qualifying

0

Vibrant qualifying session lived this Saturday in Spain. Charles Leclerc took another pole position (fourth of 2022) by being fastest in the final attempt of Q3, where Max Verstappen suffered a power and DRS problem. The Monegasque had to recover from a spin at the first attempt, but his only time in the final round was the best of the weekend.

In the first attempt of Q3, Carlos Sainz overtook Pérez and the Mercedes, while Leclerc failed at the entrance of the chicane and had to abort. For his part, Verstappen flew to leave Sainz three and a half tenths and place himself first. However, the Dutchman could do nothing on his last lap and had to settle for second place.

Mercedes hoped to have a great car when they reduced the effect of porpoising that they have suffered since the pre-season, and with the improvements introduced in Barcelona this has been proven. The Germans joined the fight and threatened Ferrari and Red Bull, but they couldn’t finish ‘eating at their table’.

Even so, George Russell, again faster than Lewis Hamilton, managed to be fourth and will start from the second row, ahead of Sergio Pérez and Hamilton himself.

The public that filled the Circuit de Catalunya as in the great times was greatly disappointed when Fernando Alonso was eliminated at the first change, in Q1, after running into traffic on his final attempt. Alpine took him out on the track almost without time and at the last chicane he met Lando Norris, who was also preparing his lap. Race management decided that no investigation was needed.

It was a session with surprises, such as the presence of the two Haas F1 Team in Q3, or seeing both Aston Martin Racing fall in Q1, despite the huge package of updates that their car has this weekend. In the case of the American team, Mick Schumacher was helped by the decision to erase a lap from Norris at the end of Q2.

Also in the top 10 will be a Valtteri Bottas who is completing a great weekend, and who will start ahead of Magnussen , Daniel Ricciardo and Mick .

This was the Q1 of the classification of the Spanish GP 2022 of F1

Guanyu Zhou was the only rider on track when the lights came on and qualifying for the Spanish GP began, but he was quickly joined by the AlphaTauri and soon more riders. Among the favorites, the Red Bulls were the first to leave, and Verstappen led the table with a slipstreaming 1:20.091, until the Ferraris overtook him.

Leclerc overtook Sainz by just 0.031s on the first lap, and the Mercedes stayed fourth and fifth, almost four and almost five tenths behind the Cavallino. Pérez had even been surpassed by Bottas, and was seventh after the first attempt.

An investigation was announced for a possible unsafe release of Stroll, who was almost carried away by Lando Norris in the pitlane. For his part, in his first attempt, Alonso was 12th. With two minutes remaining, the Williams, Stroll, Gasly and Mick Schumacher were in the elimination zone, and Ricciardo and Vettel were at risk.

Mick Schumacher managed to improve, like Gasly. So did Vettel, but it was not enough and the German was eliminated. Next to him, without being able to achieve a great lap with the Alpine and with traffic, Fernando Alonso, along with Stroll and the Williams.

This was the Q2 of the classification of the Spanish GP 2022 of F1

The second round started calmly, but once the Mercedes came out, almost everyone followed them. Russell set a brilliant 1m19.470s, three tenths quicker than Hamilton. Russell’s time was the best of the weekend, leaving the Red Bulls and Ferrari behind. It was not yet final, since Bottas had also slipped ahead of Verstappen and Sainz, but Mercedes was starting to scare.

After the first attempt, in addition to the AlphaTauri, the virtual eliminations were Esteban Ocon, Daniel Ricciardo and Guanyu Zhou. Carlos Sainz managed to put the Ferrari first, but Verstappen lowered the Madrid mark even further to stop the clock at 1:19.219 that gave him first place. Behind, only Ricciardo improved enough to avoid screening, and that put Mick Schumacher in the elimination zone. However, both Perez and Lando Norris had their final lap time taken away, causing the McLaren Briton to go out.
