The Buddenbrookhaus, the Burgtor, the inner city churches and also the Holstentor will no longer be illuminated at night. Why the city decided to take this step.

Lübeck – In order to save energy, Lübeck will switch off the outside lighting in public buildings from Monday (August 29). The city announced on Friday that the Buddenbrookhaus, the Burgtor, the inner-city churches, the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital and also the Holstentor were affected.

Mayor Jan Lindenau (SPD) said he was aware that many citizens and guests of the city were reluctant to miss the sight of the illuminated historic old town silhouette in the evening. “But it is the need of the hour to do everything possible as a municipality to save energy.”

So far, the buildings mentioned have been illuminated from the onset of darkness until 1 a.m. According to the city, the shutdown saves an average of 139.5 kilowatt hours of electrical energy per night. dpa
