“Take everyone into account in our address”: Lufthansa wants to use gender-neutral formulations on flights in the future. The new regulation also applies to other airlines in the group.

Frankfurt / Main – Lufthansa will in future not use the greeting “Dear Sir or Madam” on its flights. The English “Ladies and Gentlemen” should also be a thing of the past.

Instead, the crews should welcome their guests on board with gender-neutral formulations, confirmed a company spokeswoman in Frankfurt on Tuesday. The regulation applies to all airlines in the group, including the companies Austrian, Swiss, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines. First the “Bild-Zeitung” reported.

“It is important to us that we take everyone into account in our address,” said a Lufthansa spokesman for the newspaper. Very different formulations such as “Hello”, “Good evening” or simply “Welcome aboard” could be considered. The decision would be made by the boss in each case.

The airline’s announcement has led to heated discussions on social networks, with gender critics threatening to refrain from air travel. Lufthansa made it clear in the afternoon that the announcement had not been banned. Nobody has to fear disciplinary measures who use the traditional greeting.

“Our goal is to welcome everyone on board equally,” said a spokesman once again, explaining the company’s wish. Depending on the context and situation, there are different options for this. “Diversity and equality are central values for our company and our corporate culture. We want to express this attitude in our language as well. ”Dpa
