Madagascar is a place that arouses curiosity in all of us; where nature has evolved at its own pace and under its own rules.
We are talking about an island country, off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, being the fourth largest island in the world that in 1960, the country became a fully independent country called the Malagasy Republic and, later, the Democratic Republic of Madagascar in 1975 and, finally, in the Republic of Madagascar in 1993.
Covering an enormous area of nearly 600,000 square kilometers, and with so much land area, it should come as no surprise that Madagascar features highly diverse and distinctive terrains and habitats: from volcanic mountain ranges, central highlands, to humid tropical rainforests in the east, cliffs of dry sandstone in the west and rare karst forests in the north.
You may not know that the highest mountain in Madagascar is Maromokotro. It measures 2,876 meters high and, among its forests are the most varied species of animals. We will find many endemic species that do not exist anywhere else on the planet.
Among the best known species of Madagascar are lemurs or chameleons or even the rare aye aye primate ( Daubentonia madagascariensis ), which is also related to lemurs.
Did you know that more than 50% of the world population of chameleons is found on this island? There are also over 346 species of reptiles you can’t see anywhere else, including the world’s largest chameleons (Parson’s chameleon) and smallest (Brookesian dwarf chameleon).
