A fire broke out on Thursday evening on the area of a wallpaper factory in Kirchhain, Hesse.

For reasons as yet unknown, there was apparently a fire in the locksmith’s shop after a loud bang, as it was called. According to information from employees, all those present managed to leave the burning building on time.

Difficult extinguishing work

According to the police, around 250 firefighters were able to bring the fire under control around midnight and prevent the flames from spreading to other parts of the building. The extinguishing work turned out to be difficult due to leaked, flammable operating materials. It will take several hours until they are finally completed, the police said in the night.

Because of the heavy smoke development, the police asked residents to keep their doors and windows closed – and not to come to the scene of the fire, so as not to endanger the extinguishing and rescue work or themselves. Early on Friday morning, the police gave the all-clear: Measurements carried out by the fire brigade had not found any pollutants in the air, so there was no longer any danger from smoke development. Due to the smell of fire, the emergency services advised to keep the windows closed. Initially, nothing was known about the amount of damage. The Marburg criminal police started the investigation. dpa
