In Mallorca, the new infections are skyrocketing – according to the regional president, however, there are no new measures for the time being.

Palma – The delta variant of the coronavirus is spreading in more and more holiday areas, the number of infections is increasing rapidly again in some cases. This trend does not stop at the Balearic Islands with Mallorca. The island is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans – and was one of the first to receive holidaymakers again.

Mallorca: holiday region with exploding new infections

But the number of new infections is also skyrocketing on Mallorca. The health authorities of the Spanish Mediterranean islands announced in Palma on Friday (July 16) that 864 coronavirus infections were recorded within 24 hours, more than ever before in a single day since the outbreak of the pandemic. This exceeded the previous maximum value of the previous day – by a total of 69 cases. With a worried look, some look back to the time in January, when more than 700 infections were recorded per day and the region temporarily had the highest values in Spain in terms of population.

Regional President speaks of an “absolutely safe holiday destination”

A night curfew should not be reintroduced for the time being. This excludes the regional government further, reported the newspaper Última Hora , citing the authorities. In other parts of Spain, such as Valencia and Catalonia, this has already been decided again. However, it is entirely possible to reintroduce new restrictions on the number of people for joint meetings in public and private spaces.

Regional President Francina Armengol said there will be no new measures before the end of next week. The current wave of infections has nothing to do with the previous one, she said. And further: The situation in the hospitals is “completely under control”. The Balearic Islands are “an absolutely safe holiday destination”.

Spain already a risk area

Everywhere in Spain the authorities assert that one should exercise caution, but not panic. It is mainly younger, not yet vaccinated people who are currently infected. The course of the disease is therefore usually much milder. The federal government has already classified Spain as a risk area. So far, the country is not yet considered a high incidence area, holidaymakers in Spain are currently spared the quarantine obligation.
