Markus Lanz was about the mask scandal on the government plane, cum-ex and the energy crisis and how the values of the Greens have changed.

Berlin – As always, Markus Lanz on ZDF discussed the issues that move the country and that also means these days: the mask scandal on the government plane. A few photos of journalists and top politicians sitting on the plane without masks on the return flight from Canada were enough to spark a storm on social media. That is “elitist double standards”, hypocritical, especially since a few days later the Corona rules for the fall, which stipulate masks on the plane, were decided.

On the plane was Eva Quadbeck, deputy editor-in-chief of the editorial network Germany , who had accompanied Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his deputy Robert Habeck to Canada and reported on the trip to Markus Lanz on ZDF. She explained the particularly strict rules on board, which required all passengers to have a current, negative PCR test, i.e. much stricter conditions than usual. Populist outrage is therefore out of place, although Quadbeck also conceded that the role model character of politics was done a disservice by the pictures.

Talk with Markus Lanz on ZDF: Praise and scolding for Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Scholz does not deliver a good picture in the Cum-Ex scandal either, can remember little or nothing in the relevant investigative committees, which inspired bestselling author Ferdinand von Schirach at Markus Lanz on ZDF to make the apt remark that it is not very credible to always again to hide behind the statement that he doesn’t remember, but at the same time to assert unequivocally that he did everything right. The Chancellor is not corrupt, everyone involved agreed, but why did Scholz, why did Hamburg waive so much money?

However, the chancellor received praise for his attempt to secure energy supplies in Canada for the next few years. Without stopping in Washington, Scholz and Habeck flew to Canada, not for short-term solutions, but for long-term ones. However, trying to divest from Russian gas also leads to buying fracked gas from Canada. What does Anton Hofreiter say, representative of the left wing of the Greens, who was passed over when the federal government awarded offices. If Hofreiter had a grudge against his Realo colleagues, he didn’t show anything to Markus Lanz on ZDF.

Hofreiter accepts the toads that the Greens have to swallow due to the current situation, with how much abdominal pain it is difficult to say. As an example of “the normative power of the factual”, Ferdinand von Schirach described the struggle for values, the realization that the Greens and, of course, the society in which they move, have changed massively since their foundation. What was once a protest party has become a middle-class party, and the values that the Greens stand for have shifted accordingly.

Markus Lanz on ZDF: The values for which the Greens stand have shifted

However, Hofreiter disagreed with Markus Lanz on ZDF on at least one point: Despite all the current problems, the war in Ukraine, the high inflation, the fundamental goal of green politics remains to reduce CO² emissions in order to combat climate change. Economics Minister Robert Habeck also attested to Eva Quadbeck’s great pragmatism, whose new style of politics has made him the country’s most popular politician. “The sufferer” was the headline of Der Spiegel in its last statement, the petition in Qatar may have been an early low point in his term of office, which is offset by many successes.

The gas surcharge is unlikely to be one of the highlights, as there is too much concern that companies that do not need it could also benefit from it. And that’s a surprising number of energy supply companies that earn more than well from the enormously increased gas and electricity prices.

To compensate, Hofreiter spoke of the plan for an excess profit tax, which would be difficult to control, however: because do you also want to skim off companies like BionTech, which are also making massive profits? In any case, Markus Lanz will not run out of topics to talk about anytime soon. (Michael Meyns)
