Márquez: "I needed it, for me to compete is to fight to win"

Márquez himself assured in the previous one that he did not see himself to win, but that he maintained a thread of hope if “the circumstances arise”. And they happened, without a doubt, because the Honda rider completed his best race since the injury, a year ago, managing to return to victory for the first time since November 2019 , in Valencia.

Márquez has won 11 consecutive times in Germany, eight of them in the queen class, an idyll that could not be broken even by the most serious injury of his life.

“This is one of the hardest and most important moments of my career,” said Marc after the race.

“I knew I had a great opportunity. It wasn’t easy mentally, but I knew it was the day. He came to fight for the podium, but if the conditions were right he could go for it. When I saw a few drops falling I told myself that it was my moment and I pushed hard, I took risks and when four drops fell again I made my run. It was hard to stay focused because everything we’ve been through this year comes to mind. It was a difficult situation, but now we are going to try to maintain the same level”, added the Honda rider.

“I’m not going to cry, I’m not going to cry…”, Marc repeated before the microphones before the interview on DAZN .

“I am neither happy nor sad. Tonight will be different, I imagine. We have won again, I don’t know how. We have been good over the weekend, but not ahead of the rest. I didn’t expect to win because Oliveira was doing very well, but when I saw those four drops of rain fall, with Aleix behind, I knew it was time to attack. Then I had to manage, I changed Oliveira for Martínez , my sparring partner in training, I thought it wasn’t Miguel and that way I was able to focus on the race”, he explained excitedly.

“I hope there will be many moments like this until the end of the season. I want to thank Honda, who has respected me a lot during the injury, and all the doctors, from the first to the last, my whole team and my brother. We’ve all done it together,” he said on the verge of tears.

“I needed it because I have always said it, for me to compete is to fight for something, to fight for victories and podiums is what I want in the future. I’m not up to it now. Here I have not noticed the physical limitation. As there are few curves to the right, the arm has not been loaded. From the outside it is seen differently and it is not known what we are suffering. The bike also adapts well to this circuit.”

Despite going almost two years without winning, Marc was not particularly euphoric.

“I’m not euphoric or anything, it will take a little time to realize all this.”

“Now it’s time to say thank you. It doesn’t go down by itself and it doesn’t go up by itself. We must thank the people who have supported me, and above all those who have understood the situation”.

Márquez insisted that he has locked himself in his world, isolating himself from outside comments.

“I have focused on my work and I have escaped from the world. I didn’t want to know anything about anyone, I didn’t even post on networks, I just sent the photos. I have focused on my life and my work and I will continue like this until the end of the season because there is still a lot to improve”.

After returning to victory, it is time to value all the work and suffering.

“Personally, you value much more what you did before. It was taken for granted that you had to win. If he didn’t win it was a disaster. This time has taught me to value other things. I’m still not the same Marc, but in Mugello and Barcelona I’ve already noticed some improvement, and here much more. In Holland we will suffer again, but calmly to see if we can be closer to the first”.

The one from Honda explained two weeks ago that a conversation with Mick Doohan helped him a lot, as well as talking to other ex-pilots who went through difficult times.

“When you are in a difficult situation you seek comfort or express yourself with someone who has been through the same thing. Alberto Puig has helped me a lot, Alzamora too, but Doohan’s call helped me a lot. He told me about his injury and what he went through, and it seemed like he was explaining my own case. What happened to him with the bike, with the injury, the stupid mistakes he had, just like me, that you had to be patient and keep working, and seeing that a legend like him went through the same thing helps you because he ended up overcoming it, which is what I work for.”
