Márquez, to those who suggest retirement: "I am the Honda with the most points"

0

The MotoGP world championship misses Marc Márquez, and this has been proven at the Austrian Grand Prix, held last weekend at the Red Bull Ring. The Spanish driver, who has been away from racing since the last Italian Grand Prix, went to the paddock for the first time, although as a visitor.

His presence at Spielberg generated a stir, and Márquez came to give an exclusive press conference to try to shed light on all the unknowns surrounding his operation. In addition, the one from Cervera granted an exclusive interview to DAZN , in its new format ‘Carpool’, in which he revealed how he emotionally went through his fourth operation on the humerus.

The truth is that, since his crash in Jerez at the start of the 2020 campaign, the Spaniard has not raised his head. Operation after operation, his arm never fully healed, and his performance on the track was diminished. That is why, when he announced that he was going to take a break in the season to re -enter the operating room , many on social networks suggested he withdraw.

“The words ‘Retire, ya’ I’ve read them, and I say: ‘I’ll retire if I get out of the…'” exclaimed an annoyed Marc. “I’ll know if I quit or not! At the moment I’m the Honda with the most points in the championship. It hurts me to read that sentence, but I have learned that I use social networks to inform my people.”

Far from thinking about hanging up his helmet, the eight-time world champion says he wants to return to competition “before the season is over.” But he does not intend to fall into the same mistakes of the past, and assumes that first he will have to have the ‘ok’ of the doctors.

“If you can’t compete [again this year] because the doctors tell me that you can’t, you won’t compete before the end of the season,” he says.

And, of course, the very complicated situation that Honda is going through could not be ignored. “[Honda] is not lost, but it is at a point where it would be very easy to panic,” he explains. “And when you panic in such a large company, with a team, hot, quick decisions are made, which you may later regret. Information is being lost because… It is seen that sometimes emails are lost.”

“The good thing is that there is no one with a blindfold, everyone is realistic and sees the problem. I have told them not to believe that changing pilots is going to solve the issue,” he adds, and that is that Honda will have in 2023, at least two new drivers.

Only the signing of Alex Rins has been confirmed to fill the vacancy left by Alex Márquez, but Pol Espargaró has already announced his departure for KTM and Takaaki Nakagami could be contesting his last races in the premier class.

Marc understands that his colleagues on the grid have doubts when it comes to accepting offers from the Japanese manufacturer: “Right now it’s difficult to convince riders to come to Honda.”
