The Spaniard was one of the protagonists of the race, fighting during all the laps in the front positions in search of the podium, which was his great goal this weekend in Austria, as well as finishing ahead of Enea Bastianini, his rival in the promotion to the official Ducati team, which could not finish the race.
With Enea, who started on pole, knocked out in the early stages, Martín was able to focus on finding his rhythm and waiting for his chance behind Jack Miller, but the arrival of Fabio Quartararo in the final part and an untimely crash at the start of the last lap, they ruined their plans.
Jorge Martín overtook Miller at the end of the straight, just after the penultimate step over the finish line, but after passing the Australian he lost his front gear and fell. The man from Madrid had the strength to pick up the bike, return to the race and cross the finish line tenth.
“I had to try it, I couldn’t settle for a fourth place being able to be on the podium, anyway I’ll stick with the pace we had in the race”, explained Martín, who in addition to the fall made a straight when he was third that ruined part of his options.
“I made a straight and I lost a lot of time that I had to recover, something that is not easy, and I got hooked again with Fabio and Jack, and there I used up a lot of rubber. I felt stronger than them, but it was difficult to brake where Miller was, and when I stopped the bike without rubber in front, the tire said up to here”, explained the crash.
“In the end I’m happy because I’ve given everything and the race in general has gone very well”, added the satisfied Spaniard.
On the straight that he did in the final part of the race, which Quartararo took advantage of to overtake him, Martín explained why he raised his hand, a curious action.
“Yes, I wanted to reconfirm and let them see that I was losing time, because seeing how race direction works, it is better to make it clear to them that you are doing the right thing, because if on top of losing time they punished me with a long lap, I would not have understood. I lost just one second, which is what I had to lose so that they didn’t penalize me”, said the man from Pramac.
