Michael Masi is set to replace the last chairman of the Supercars Commission, Neil Crompton , who stepped down at the end of June.

If it happens, it will be Masi’s first job since his controversial break with the FIA following the controversial end of the 2021 Formula 1 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

According to multiple sources, the Supercars category is in the process of having team owners approve Masi ‘s appointment at Sandown this weekend.

Australian-born Masi already made a name for himself in Supercars when he held a role as deputy race director at Motorsport Australia before joining the FIA in 2018 as an assistant to then Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting . .

Following Whiting’s sudden and tragic passing on the eve of the 2019 Australian Grand Prix, the Austrian was promoted to the role of race director for motorsport’s top flight.

He held the role until the end of last season, before being sacked as part of the decision-making and fallout in the wake of the controversial finish to the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP.

The Supercars Commission manages the technical and sporting regulations for the Australian series, and its recommendations go to the Board of Directors for final approval.

Crompton , who is also the main commentator for Supercars, had held the role of chairman on an interim basis since the 2020 season, leaving the position on 30 June 2021.
