It should start at the end of October: Then astronaut Mathias Maurer flies to the International Space Station (ISS). There will be a lot missing there, fresh air and also crunchy food.

Oberthal / Houston – Astronaut Matthias Maurer will be missing some of the earth on board the International Space Station (ISS). “A fresh, crispy roll”, for example, he will miss, said the 51-year-old of the German press agency.

Because there will be no crispy food on the ward: If you accidentally inhale or get in your eyes, floating crumbs could in the worst case become a medical problem. Therefore, the food must be “more sticky or soggy,” said Maurer.

And what else? “I will definitely miss the fresh air,” he said. “I love nature, the smells in the forest, when the wind blows around your nose by the sea, raindrops on your skin, the many different colors – especially in autumn.”

Maurer, who comes from the Saarland community of Oberthal, is expected to take off for the International Space Station (ISS) on October 30th. If everything goes according to plan, the Saarland resident will be the twelfth German in space after taking off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida – and the fourth German on the ISS.

His home community is already looking forward to the start. A “take-off event” is planned on site to accompany Maurer, says the mayor of the 4000-inhabitant town, Stephan Rausch. “The voltage increases. We are very proud. ”Dpa
