McLaren has increased its portfolio of drivers in recent months and, in turn, has also chosen to expand into more and more categories and disciplines of motorsport, with its foray into IndyCar and Formula E as the most prominent beyond its historic presence in the Formula 1 World Championship.

The Woking team seems to have eyes on every corner of every circuit around the world and does not want any talent to escape its recruitment net and, as part of that ambitious programme, will hold a private test this week. with an eye on the future.

This week, from Wednesday the 14th to Friday the 16th, McLaren will put on the asphalt of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya the single-seater that competed last season in the highest category of motorsport to carry out a private test together with three renowned drivers from the IndyCar .

Pato O’Ward, Alex Palou and Colton Herta will be the three in charge of getting behind the wheel of the MCL35M during the three days of testing, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, which will serve the British team to assess the talent and performance of each of them at the wheel of a Formula 1 car and, in turn, make direct comparisons.

The Mexican driver has been part of the McLaren team’s lineup in IndyCar since the 2020 campaign, while the Spaniard is in the middle of a lawsuit that will decide whether the contract he signed with those from Woking is valid or if he is obliged to stay with his current team, Chip Ganassi, for at least one more season. Colton Herta has recently been linked to AlphaTauri, but he also has a very close relationship with the British team, which is expected to give him the chance to drive their 2022 F1 car (the MCL36) in a Free Practice 1 session between now and the end of this course.

However, this private test is not at all related to McLaren ‘s seats in Formula 1 for next season, as Lando Norris has a contract until 2025 and Oscar Piastri was recently confirmed on a multi-year deal after win the judgment of the F1 Board of Contracts which ruled against the interests of Alpine.
