Too warm too dry: The weather expert Karsten Brandt speaks of a “steppe summer, a wonderful, sunny, but unfortunately dry summer”.

Berlin – sun, heat, hardly any rain: Germany could still have a long summer in 2022. This could last well into September, says the Bonn climate and weather expert Karsten Brandt.

“I think we have a good chance of getting high pressure again in September – with very short phases that bring a few showers in between.” The meteorologist even thinks it’s possible that a total of 800 hours of sunshine will be achieved in Germany . “Let’s look forward to a few nice days.”

The disadvantage: drought and dryness. Brandt describes it as a “steppe summer, a wonderful, sunny, but unfortunately dry summer”. Because of the persistent drought, one could therefore also speak of a “weather event” that is due to climate change, according to the climate expert. “We have had the problem for several years that we have rising temperatures, resulting in more evaporation and fluctuating amounts of precipitation.” The drought and the resulting drought are not the problem of a single year, but the result of a longer period of time.

Brandt does not give much hope for rain and relaxation, especially on the rivers, which are currently plagued by low water. “If you consider that September is one of the driest months (…) of the year together with March and April, then that gives reason to fear – regardless of the weather development, which doesn’t look good either: it looks more like high pressure , after dry, after continued summer weather – that we will get a longer period of low tide. Not only on the Rhine, but also on the other rivers. And maybe in November or December, then the water levels will rise again.” dpa
